1190
First mention
The history of Braffe goes back to 1190, when Gonthier du Quesnoy, just before leaving on crusade, handed the lordship of Braffe to the d'Antoing family. Over the centuries, the estate then passed through the hands of several noble families.
1705
Construction of the château
In 1660, Michel de Gaest bought the lordship of Braffe. In 1705 he had the present château built in the typical Tournai style, in brick and blue stone. The de Gaest family remained owners of the estate until 1854.
19th century
The le Maistre d'Anstaing family
In 1854, the Braffe estate passed to Henri Maelcamp, husband of Caroline de Gaest. Their daughter married Idesbald le Maistre d'Anstaing, and so the estate passed to the le Maistre d'Anstaing family.
1870
Extension of the château
From 1870, Henri le Maistre d'Anstaing had the château considerably extended. A new wing, towers and outbuildings gave the estate its present character. The historic chapel, where several of the family's ancestors rest, is also part of the ensemble.

The park
Around the château lies a magnificent park with expansive meadows, a pond and centuries-old trees. Two impressive cedars of Lebanon, planted around 1800, are among the most striking trees on the estate.
2023
A new chapter
After generations in the hands of the le Maistre d'Anstaing family, the estate passed in 2023 to Baron and Baroness Patrick de Livois. Baroness de Livois is the granddaughter of Maryse le Maistre d'Anstaing, who was born and raised at Braffe. In this way the château remains, after more than three centuries, in the hands of the family.
Today
Opening up to events
Today, a new chapter is being written. With the opening of the event spaces and the gîte, the historic estate takes on a new purpose and opens its doors to special moments. In this way Château de Braffe lives on, with respect for its history, its family character and its exceptional heritage.
Architecture
Tournai style
Château de Braffe is built in the typical Tournai style, which gives the château a distinctive and elegant appearance. The architecture sits harmoniously with the character of the region and adds to the timeless charm of the estate.
Mansard roof
The characteristic mansard roof is one of the building’s striking features. Its distinctive shape gives the building a stately silhouette and reinforces the classic appearance that makes Château de Braffe so recognisable.
Historic outbuildings
The historic outbuildings are also part of the character of Château de Braffe. Together with the château and its green surroundings, they form one harmonious whole and help tell the story of the estate over the years.
